Takeaways from Browns happenings …

As expected, the Browns have tabbed Andy Dickerson to fill the giant shoes of departed offensive line guru Bill Callahan.

Dickerson was the first candidate formally interviewed for the vacant offensive coordinator job, but he was viewed as a fallback option at offensive line if Callahan elected to follow his son Brian to Tennessee, which indeed happened.

Callahan, 67, has been an NFL coach for 25 years. He specialized in offensive line for 19 of those seasons.

Dickerson, 42, has coached offensive line the past two seasons with the Seattle Seahawks.

Dickerson began his NFL career as an intern in the New England Patriots operations department. He followed Eric Mangini to the New York Jets as defensive quality control assistant and joined Mangini with the Browns in defensive quality control. Dickerson turned to the offensive line as assistant to line coach George Warhop in 2010.

He returned to the Jets in 2011, served the Rams from 2012-2020 as assistant line coach and then joined the Seahawks in 2021 as run game coordinator before taking over the offensive line the past two years.

And then there was one

Scott Peters, who was Callahan’s assistant line coach the past four seasons, agreed to follow former Browns coordinator Alex Van Pelt to New England and was named Patriots offensive line coach.

T.C. McCartney, who was not retained as Browns tight ends coach, reportedly will rejoin Van Pelt as Patriots quarterbacks coach.

That left wide receivers coach Chad O’Shea as the only holdover from Kevin Stefanski’s original offensive coaching staff in 2020. O’Shea also holds the title of pass game coordinator.

Other coaches still on board from Stefanski’s first staff include Callie Brownson (assistant receivers coach), Kevin Rogers (senior offensive assistant), Jason Tarver (linebackers), Brandon Lynch (cornerbacks coach), Ben Bloom (to be determined), and Stephen Bravo-Brown (assistant special teams coach).

The Browns also have retained four members of their strength and conditioning and performance staff since 2020.

What about a QB coach?

The Browns are expected to keep Ashton Grant as offensive assistant/quarterbacks coach.

Brush up on your Portuguese

The odds of the Browns being assigned as the opponent for the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL’s first game in Sao Paolo, Brazil are increasing.

The Eagles have been designated the home team for the newest venue in the league’s expanding International Series. The game will be played on Friday night of Week One on September 6.

The Browns are one of nine teams on the Eagles’ home schedule. Deductive reasoning leads one to point to the Browns as the likeliest opponent to play in Brazil.

First, the league shies from scheduling intra-division games abroad. So let’s eliminate games against NFC East rivals Dallas, Washington and the Giants.

Philadelphia’s remaining home opponents are Carolina, Atlanta, Green Bay, Jacksonville, Pittsburgh and the Browns.

1. Carolina has been designated the home team for a game in Munich, Germany in 2024. So scratch the Panthers.

2. Atlanta played in London last year. Scratch the Falcons.

3. Green Bay played in London in 2022. Scratch the Packers.

4. Jacksonville is hosting a game in London for the 11th time in 2024. Scratch the Jaguars.

5. Pittsburgh has not played an international game since 2013, but it reportedly has volunteered to host a game in Mexico City in 2025. So, possibly scratch the Steelers.

6. That leaves the Browns, folks.

Nos vemos em São Paulo, Browns fans.
