It’s been a busy road trip for the Browns’ top football brass.
GM Andrew Berry and head coach Kevin Stefanski have conducted private workouts this week with Alabama’s Jalen Milroe and Mississippi’s Jaxson Dart, along with Miami’s Cam Ward, TheLandOnDemand has learned.
Owner Jimmy Haslam has accompanied his top football men at all three visits.
The workout with Ward on Wednesday was previously reported by CanesInsight.com.
TheLandOnDemand has learned that prior to working out Ward, the Browns’ contingent met with Milroe in Tuscaloosa, AL, on Monday and Tuesday of this week. They moved on to Coral Gables, FL, for a two-day visit with Ward, and then traveled directly to Oxford, MS, to meet and work out Dart.
These are believed to be among the top four quarterbacks under consideration by the Browns as they seek to find their next franchise hopeful.
They will round out their top four with a meeting and workout of Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders in Boulder, CO, after Colorado’s pro day on April 4.
The Browns did not have a big presence at the pro day workouts of Milroe and Ward because of their pre-scheduled private meetings. Dart will be on display at Mississippi’s pro day on Friday. The Browns will have a representative there, but Berry, Stefanski and Haslam likely will not attend.
A Browns’ official would not confirm the workouts other than to say of Haslam & Co., “They are on the road this week.”
The three men will circle back to Palm Beach, FL, for three days at NFL annual meetings.
With all NFL owners, GMs and head coaches together at the meetings, the luxurious grounds and poolside bungalows at The Breakers Resort are fertile ground for trade talk involving the top of the draft.
The Titans hold the No. 1 pick. This week new Tennessee GM Mike Borgonzi said on the team’s official Website, “I would say everything is still on the table.”
The Browns are covering their bases with workouts of multiple quarterbacks because they have several options with the No. 2 overall pick in the April 24-26 draft.
They can trade up with Tennessee for the No. 1 spot, stay at No. 2 and pick a quarterback, or a higher-graded player such as Travis Hunter of Colorado or Abdul Carter of Penn State, or trade down for extra picks and tab their quarterback from the second wave of QB prospects.
Carter’s pro day was scheduled for Friday at State College, PA, but the pass rusher has been scratched from participating because of a shoulder injury suffered during the season.
Agent Drew Rosenhaus told ESPN, “He may still do a workout for teams sometime in mid-April.”
Carter also was diagnosed with a stress reaction in his right foot during medical testing at the NFL Combine in February. That injury, which can be a precursor to a stress fracture, was considered a non-factor in Carter’s draft status.
But until Carter works out, the uncertainty about his health could affect, perhaps, Tennessee’s willingness to bypass Ward and trade the No. 1 pick. It has been commonly assumed that Carter would be the Titans’ preferred choice if they moved out of the No. 1 spot.
