A not-so-great offseason for Myles Garrett continued when he finished third in voting for the Associated Press NFL defensive player-of-the-year award Thursday. Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II was first and Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson was second.
Garrett, who spent all day Wednesday on Radio Row at the Super Bowl touting his desire to be traded by the Browns, was trying to become the first back-to-back winner since Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald in 2017-18.
Garrett finished third in the balloting among 50 AP voters, who cast ballots for five players on a 10-5-3-2-1 points basis. Garrett received only 5 votes for first place, but tied for first with 11 second-place votes and led with 12 third-place votes.
The vote totals released by AP:

The AP NFL awards are the most significant of three handed out after the season. Garrett won DPOY given by the Sporting News and voted on by players. Surtain also won the DPOY given by the Professional Football Writers of America.
Based on interviews Garrett gave on Wednesday, he shouldn’t be fazed by losing the DPOY award. He repeatedly said individual honors no longer thrill him, that his only desire after eight seasons with the Browns is to play in and win a Super Bowl.
He said he requested a trade from the Browns because after talking with GM Andrew Berry “I just don't think we're aligned on where the team is going in the near future.”
Berry has repeatedly said the Browns have no intention of trading Garrett.
The last award presented at NFL Honors was the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year. It went to Jacksoville Jaguars defensive lineman Arik Armstead. Browns cornerback Denzel Ward was one of 32 nominees for the league's highest honor.
