Editor's note: Tony Grossi is a Cleveland Browns analyst for TheLandOnDemand.com and 850 ESPN Cleveland.
Every year at this time I get to use one of my favorite words – penultimate.
Used in a sentence: This is my penultimate mock draft. Meaning, next-to-last.
As such, mock draft 9.0 is merely part of the process – not the destination. Our final mock on Thursday will serve as TheLandOnDemand.com’s official prediction of the first round of the NFL draft.
I usually use my penultimate mock to get out the final kinks of my draft process. For that reason, we are including trades once again in this unusual (for me) 2021 draft process.
1. Jacksonville Jaguars: QB Trevor Lawrence, Clemson
R.I.P. Minshew mania.
Last time: Lawrence.
2. New York Jets: QB Zach Wilson, Brigham Young
He’d better have tough skin to survive Big Apple media maelstrom.
Last time: Wilson.
3. San Francisco 49ers: QB Justin Fields, Ohio State
FWIW, Kyle Shanahan supposedly liked Tom Savage over Jimmy Garoppolo in the 2014 draft.
Last time: Fields.
4. Atlanta Falcons: TE Kyle Pitts, Florida
New regime resists urge to trade and takes key piece in new coach Arthur Smith’s offense.
Last time: Mac Jones (Patriots)
5. Cincinnati Bengals: WR Ja’Marr Chase, LSU
Chase, Tyler Boyd and Tee Higgins give Joe Burrow a formidable trio. (Why Browns need another cornerback.)
Last time: Chase.
TRADE: Dolphins trade No. 6 to Panthers for No. 8 and No. 73.
6. Carolina Panthers (from Dolphins): QB Trey Lance, North Dakota State
Sam Darnold gets first crack at starting job, but he’d better win early.
Last time: Pitts (Dolphins).
7. Detroit Lions: OT Penei Sewell, Oregon
Best offensive tackle falls to rebuilding Lions.
Last time: Sewell.
8. Miami Dolphins (from Panthers): WR Jaylen Waddle, Alabama
After two trade-downs sandwiched around a trade up, they wind up with their receiver of choice, anyways.
Last time: Lance (Panthers).
9. Denver Broncos: LB Micah Parsons, Penn State
Best defensive prospect falls to defensive-minded coach.
Last time: Parsons.
TRADE: Cowboys trade No. 10 to Patriots for No. 15 and No. 46.
10: New England Patriots (from Cowboys): QB Mac Jones, Alabama
To me, Jones resembles Tom Brady with his pocket presence, deep ball touch and quick processing.
Last time: Patrick Surtain.
11.New York Giants: WR DeVonta Smith, Alabama
Last time: Waddle.
12.Philadelphia Eagles (from Dolphins): CB Patrick Surtain, Alabama
Last time: Jaycee Horn.
13.Los Angeles Chargers: OT Rashawn Slater, Northwestern
Last time: Slater.
14.Minnesota Vikings: DE Kwity Paye, Michigan
Last time: Phillips.
15: Dallas Cowboys (from Patriots): LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, Notre Dame
Last time: Jones (Patriots).
16.Arizona Cardinals: CB Jaycee Horn, South Carolina
Last time: Horn.
17.Las Vegas Raiders: CB Caleb Farley, Virginia Tech.
Last time: Christian Barmore.
18.Miami Dolphins: DE Azeez Ojulari, Georgia
Last time: Owusu-Koramoah.
19.Washington Football Team: OT Christian Darrisaw, Virginia Tech
Last time: Darrisaw.
TRADE: Bears trade No. 20 to Cleveland Browns for No. 26, No. 91 and No. 132.
20. Cleveland Browns: CB Greg Newsome, Northwestern
Relentless Andrew Berry makes same trade in back-to-back mocks.
Last time: Newsome (Browns).
21.Indianapolis Colts: DE Jaelan Phillips, Miami
Last time: Paye.
22.Tennessee Titans: WR Rashod Bateman, Minnesota
Last time: Farley.
23.New York Jets (from Seahawks): DE Gregory Rousseau, Miami
Last time: Jayson Oweh.
24.Pittsburgh Steelers: OT Teven Jenkins, Oklahoma State
Last time: Alijah Vera-Tucker.
25.Jacksonville Jaguars: DT Christian Barmore, Alabama
Last time: Trevon Moehrig.
26.Chicago Bears (from Browns): OG Alijah Vera-Tucker, USC
Last time: Vera-Tucker (Bears).
27.Baltimore Ravens: DE Jayson Oweh, Penn State
Last time: Oweh.
28.New Orleans Saints: WR Elijah Moore, Mississippi
Last time: Moore.
29.Green Bay Packers: LB Zaven Collins, Tulsa
Last time: Davis.
30.Buffalo Bills: RB Najee Harris, Alabama
Last time: Harris.
31.Kansas City Chiefs: OT Alex Leatherwood, Alabama
Last time: Leatherwood.
32.Tampa Bay Buccaneers: RB Travis Etienne, Clemson
Last time: Etienne.
