Editor's note: Tony Grossi is a Cleveland Browns analyst for TheLandOnDemand.com and 850 ESPN Cleveland.
Hey Tony: Would you rather that the Browns figure out a trade to get Trent Williams and then make a run at Isaiah Simmons at LB, or stay the course and draft a LT at 10?
-- Bob, Springboro, OH
Hey Bob: Stay the course and select Tristen Wirfs at No. 10 would be my ideal scenario. If Wirfs is not available, I’d take the next best offensive tackle. It’s time to find the long-term successor to Joe Thomas and Williams is not it.
Hey Tony: With the uncertainty in 2020, would there be any merit to trading out of this year's picks, and stockpiling 2021 draft assets and extra cap space gambling the 2020 season is a wash? Instead of paying for players who we can't fully vet this year.
-- Craig, Japan
Hey Craig: So, bet on the 2020 season being a total loss and tanking it? Having been through that strategy in 2016 and 2017 under different circumstances, I think they would lose their fan base once and for all by doing it again. Nobody knows how this season will be affected by the coronavirus. Plus, the Browns’ positive moves in free agency run counter to your strategy. In other words, it’s too late to turn back now.
Hey Tony: What percent odds do you place on the season being canceled outright? Percent odds on a partial season? Dr. Fauci said a 2nd wave could hit in the fall?
-- Bob, Orlando, FL
Hey Bob: I have no idea.
Hey Tony: Do you see the Browns trading up or down in the 2nd round?
-- Brian, Brooklyn, NY
Hey Brian: That would depend on how the players come off the draft board in the late stages of the first round, of course. In general, I would advocate standing pat and letting the draft come to them at No. 41.
Hey Tony: Good to see you back. What is the one best thing left behind from the Freddie experience?
-- Jason, Weeki Wachee, FL
Hey Jason: Good question. The easy answer would be Mike Priefer, who was hired by Kitchens as special teams coordinator and was kept by Kevin Stefanski. But a deeper answer may be the realization that Baker Mayfield needed to be coached harder and surrounded by a support group that challenged him rather than coddled him.
Hey Tony: Is Myles Garrett a good bet to win Comeback Player of the Year at 11-1?
-- Mike, Toronto, Canada
Hey Mike: Garrett is entering his fourth season. It’s time for him to be the player he and everyone else believes he can be. That is, a defensive player who changes games by himself. I think he can be that kind of player. As far as comeback player of year, I didn’t know he qualified for that award.
Hey Tony: If there is no offseason program and limited pre-season, could we see Case Keenum as starter Week 1?
-- Dr. G, Eau Claire, WI
Hey Dr. G: No, I don’t see that happening.
Hey Tony: Where would we be now if Jimmy Haslam would have let John Dorsey fire Hue Jackson after 0-16?
-- Cory, Columbus, OH
Hey Cory: Interesting question. I really don’t think Dorsey cared to go through a coaching search his first year as GM. If he had, I’d imagine Matt Nagy would have been a top candidate. The former Chiefs offensive coordinator was hired by the Bears that year. Given the choice, I’m not sure which job Nagy would have chosen. If he had chosen the Bears, I don't know to whom Dorsey would have turned as second choice.
Hey Tony: Two questions: Clay Matthews, III? Any Bobcats likely to be drafted?
-- Jeffrey, Conway, SC
Hey Jeffrey: 1. Unfortunately, it appears Clay III will go through his NFL career without a stint in Cleveland. 2. I’m not aware of any Ohio University player expected to be drafted.
Hey Tony: With our cap space, why not try and sign Jadeveon Clowney? I know he is coming off injury but sure would be hard to beat him and Myles.
-- Elliott, Minerva, OH
Hey Elliott: Clowney’s contract demands reportedly are closer to $16 million than the $20 million previously thought. But did you know … Clowney never has had as many as 10 sacks in a season and has only 32 in 75 career games? He is not the sack artist deserving of such a high salary.
Hey Tony: Is there a price you'd give (and they would take) to move up to #2 and grab Chase Young?
-- Steve, Solon, OH
Hey Steve: Nah. I’m good.
Hey Tony: Favorite player and executive interview in the years you have covered the Browns?
-- Jack, Maplewood, NJ
Hey Jack: Favorite player interview would come from a group that includes Ozzie Newsome, Hanford Dixon, Reggie Langhorne, Clay Matthews, Joe Thomas, Phil Dawson, Josh McCown and many, many others. Favorite executive interview was 1980s GM Ernie Accorsi because he understood the job of the media and was the greatest storyteller of all time.
Hey Tony: Do the Browns end their playoff drought this year? If they make it as #7 seed, is there an asterisk?
-- Mike, Roscoe Village, IL
Hey Mike: I don’t know if they end their playoff drought, but there would be no shame in earning the No. 7 seed. When the NFL expanded from five playoff teams to six per conference in 1990, do you think anyone was ashamed of being the sixth seed?
Hey Tony: So far into this new regime is it evident that owner, GM, and Coach are all working together and making this year different than past?
-- Chad, Erie, PA
Hey Chad: Of course. But that’s not unusual for the beginning of a regime. The true test is when the regime faces adversity, how it reacts to losing and a disappointing season.
Hey Tony: What is the plan for LBs and safeties?
-- Jason, Strongsville, OH
Hey Jason: After taking a left tackle first in the draft, I would expect a free safety second and perhaps two linebackers next.
